Make Stovetop Popcorn and save yourself some money while enjoying this yummy and healthy snack that requires no special equipment.
I am addicted to popcorn. There. I said it! And for the record, Skinny Pop does not make you “skinny” if you go through the Costco size bag in less than a week. At least it’s better than eating chips! Just 42 calories per cup! AND popcorn is actually a “whole grain” so boo ya! Now that I’ve figured out how to make Stovetop Popcorn I’m not sure if I’ve made my addiction worse but hey, at least I’ve saved some moolah ($0.49 for the whole recipe!). Plus I don’t have to crowd my cupboards with popcorn machines.
My family has always really liked popcorn, especially my mom. I’m the baby of the family so maybe my mom was just burnt out but in high school, at least every other weekend my mom would say “let’s have popcorn and ice cream for dinner!” No objections there! What’s better than eating a sweet creamy bowl of ice cream and then balancing it out with some salty buttery popcorn?! And to this day, if I eat a bowl of ice cream (which I do almost every night) I grab some popcorn after.
The only equipment you need are some hot pads and a large pot (~5 quarts or larger). I use an enameled cast iron pot but metal and non-stick works too. It takes just 2 ingredients– oil and popcorn kernels! Oh, I guess 3 if you count salt.
Making it is so simple and takes just 4 minutes! Put some oil in the bottom along with 1 kernel, cover, and cook over meidum-high heat. When you hear the kernel pop you add all the kernels, give the pot a good shake and them them start popping. Once it starts sounding like firecrackers are on your stove, crack the lid a tiny bit to allow the steam to escape. Give the pan a shake every 10-15 seconds and when the popping slows to about 1 to 2 pops every second then turn off the heat, wait for the last few pops and remove the lid. You’ll get some straggling pops. Just warning ya so you don’t get popped in the face like me! Shake on some salt or whatever spices you desire and dig in!

Stovetop Popcorn
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons canola oil
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- Salt
Instructions
- Place oil and 1 kernel in a 6 quart pot over medium-high heat, covered. Once the kernel pops, add in the remaining kernels, swirl the pan to coat them all in the oil, and then place the lid back on. Continue to cook and when you hear the kernels rapidly popping, shift the lid so it is open just a crack to allow steam to escape. Occasionally gently shake the pan.
- When popping slows to about 1 every 1-2 seconds, turn off the heat, wait for a few remaining pops, and then remove the lid. Season with salt or other spices and serve.

No reason to put in a kernel add some oil and put in pc when it starts to sisszle turn down heat and keep in this sizzle mode for a bit and shake pan. This ensures kernels are same to then turn up high shake pot until close to finished popping remove from heat add salt now.
